Shaboozey went viral for his reaction to fellow country artist Megan Moroney's claim about who "invented" country music.

On Monday (May 27), Shaboozey and Moroney took the stage together to present the Favorite Country Duo or Group category at the 2025 American Music Awards in Las Vegas.

Before announcing the winner, Shaboozey highlighted country music's role in AMA history, recalling when the award for Favorite Male Country Artist was given to Charley Pride.

Moroney chimed in, saying, “That same year, Favorite Female Artist went to Lynn Anderson, and this award [Favorite Country Duo or Group] went to the Carter family, who basically invented country music.”

Moroney's claim that the Carter Family, an American folk music group known for songs like “Wabash Cannonball,” “Can the Circle Be Unbroken,” “Wildwood Flower,” and more, "invented" country music garnered a side-eye from Shaboozey. The "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" artist took a brief pause on stage and laughed at the comment before presenting the nominees for the category.

Shaboozey, a collaborator on Beyoncé's groundbreaking country album, may have had Cowboy Carter on his mind, as the body of work highlights how the genre actually originated from Black artists.

While Dan and Shay took home the trophy for Favorite Country Duo or Group, Bey was awarded for her latest project, winning Favorite Female Country Artist and Favorite Country Album at the 2025 AMAs.

Other winners of the night included Eminem, who won his first AMA in 15 years for Favorite Male Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Hip-Hop Album, and Billie Eilish, who won seven awards, including Artist of the Year and Album of the Year.
