Moment in Black History: Edmonia Lewis

Today (2.1.17) Google kicked off Black History Month with a doodle of artist Edmonia Lewis. She's not well know but when you do a little reading she's pretty interesting.

Born Mary Edmonia Lewis, she is the first woman of African-American and Native American heritage to achieve international fame and recognition as a sculptor in the fine arts world. Her work is known for incorporating themes relating to black people and Native Americans.

Before she was sculpting bust of Presidents and former Egyptian rulers, Lewis was accused of murder! Now nobody actually died but the police thought they would. According to her bio Edmonia served her friends spiced wine that poisoned them. By spiced I mean laced with a aphrodisiac known as "Spanish Fly" nowadays. Since the women recovered the police took no action.

There are a few more pretty interesting facts you can check out at Heavy.comThanks to google you can check out her work and get even more info on her life here and the Smithsonia has a full bio here.
