Today In Music History: The First Grammy Awards Didn't Include Rap

May 4 1959 the very first Grammy Awards took place in Los Angels. That year Rap did not exists as a category but R&B did. For whatever reason The Champs Tequila was considered Rhythm and Blues and they took home the Grammy.

It wasn't until 1989 that Best Rap Performance was added as a category but would only appear again in 1990 before being changed. DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince won the Grammy for Parents Just Don't Understand. Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith won but boycotted the award show because the award would not be televised. Members of NWA protested that many artist had been over looked in the category.

By 1992 The category was split into Best Solo Rap Performance and Best Rap Performance by a duo. Reconstruction of the category over the years was continuously split to include Best Rap Album, Best Solo Performance by Female/ Male Artist (until 2005 when they were again combined) and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (2002) and Best Rap Song (2004).
