What is the Senate

Today's Senate Runoff Election is not just important for the state of Georgia. Which party controls the Senate will be decided in this election. Now it may have been a min since you took a Government class or you never really knew what the senate was. That's okay, let learn about The United States Senate.

There are three branches of Government; The Executive (president, vice president, presidential cabinet), The Judicial (Supreme court and other courts), and The Legislative (Congress, House of Representatives, and the Senate). The Legislative branch makes laws that get evaluated by the Judicial branch and the Executive branch to them out carry out.

Today in Georgia Republican incumbent Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler face off against Democratic challengers Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock, respectively.

Why Does it matter who controls the Senate?

When laws that affect criminal justice reform, climate change, and health care come up the Senate will decide if the bill passes or fails. If the sitting president's party has control of the Senate, it's a lot less likely his agenda's will fail. Of course there is still the matter of the House of Representatives and Congress but a party leading Senate is still powerful.
